Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is the largest of the two airports that serve the island of Jamaica. It has been operated by MJB Airports Limited<\/a>, which is the group that the Jamaican government entered into an exclusive agreement to operate and develop the airport and property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, Sangster International Airport witnessed a remarkable influx of over 4 million passengers, showcasing its increasing popularity as a major travel hub. Notably, this impressive figure adds to the airport’s overall count of 70 million passengers since the signing of an agreement back in 2003. With its strategic location and efficient operations, Montego Bay Airport (MBJ) attracts a diverse range of visitors from various corners of the world, spanning continents such as Europe, Asia, and North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1936 the area where the Sangster International Airport sits was first identified as the perfect location for the first airport to serve the Montego Bay area. Construction of the first runway began in 1940 and the airport was completed in 1947. It began operation as Montego Bay Airport and it was later renamed Sangster International Airport after Sir Donald Sangster<\/a>, former Prime Minister of Jamaica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jamaican government took over control of the airport in 1947 and began making systematic improvements over the years. The airport’s current state is a remarkable departure from its humble beginnings. This is due in large part to the agreement that the government signed with MBJ Limited in 2003. The 30-year agreement to take over the responsibility for operations and development of the airport and all of the property surrounding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
